Contract Media Relations Officer

The University of Fiji seeks a creative and dynamic person for the position of Media Relations Officer. The position is based at Saweni Campus but the successful candidate may be required to work from other University sites and campuses when required. The successful candidate will be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor.

Responsibilities:

  • Drafting all media releases of the University in consultation with the Vice Chancellor and the Public Relations team;
  • Ensuring maximum publicity for the University’s work in local and regional media;
  • Monitoring all news and information for the University in the mainstream and social media and advising the Vice Chancellor on University responses and reactions if required;
  • Keeping contact with the University stakeholders such as the Parliamentary Secretariat for Select Committee hearing dates;
  • Keeping contact with the Government Information Services, the United Nations, and regional and NGO entities and organisations to ensure that the University is aware of and fully represented at any relevant events or meetings.
  • Writing articles for the University newsletter, UNIPULSE, and publishing UNIPULSE on a quarterly basis;
  • Providing technical publishing support to the Editors and Publisher of the University of Fiji Press, including the University Librarian for publication formalities for each publication;
  • Training presenters and facilitating the Vox Populi Radio newsroom and radio production;
  • Designing advertisements and flyers with IT Section support for the University’s programmes and advertising the programmes in a range of media for maximum exposure and marketing;
  • Improving the marketing profile of the University in consultation with the Student Recruitment Coordinator;
  • Representing the University at all public relations events and liaising with stakeholders such as the Media Council and any other relevant organization for maximum exposure of the University;
  • Maintaining close relations with media organizations in Fiji, for example, print, radio and television both in Fiji and the wider Pacific region;
  • Organizing public relations events at the University in association with the Office of the Vice Chancellor teams;
  • Assisting in the Journalism and Media Programme of the University to the level of experience and competence required in news writing, radio announcing, editing and RJ work;
  • To be responsible for coordinating all University events, such as Open Day, Market Fairs and Cyberspace Fair on behalf of the University’s Schools and the Centre for iTaukei Studies;
  • To effectively manage the website content in alignment with media relations strategies and campaigns to ensure consistent messaging and timely updates;
  • To coordinate all University media works and to assist in school marketing, visuals and photography and videos;
  • Any other public relations and media work as directed by the Vice Chancellor

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field.
  • 2-3 years’ experience working in a Media Relations role or in Public Relations.
  • Must possess excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills with strong writing and editorial abilities.
  • Highly organized with the ability to multitask.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, internet, and other public relation tools.
  • Demonstrated success with Social Media tools such as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and others.
  • Must be able to meet tight deadlines and execute flawlessly on projects in a fast-paced, often pressured environment and see a project through to completion.
  • Must be capable of maintaining confidentiality, with a high level of accuracy regarding information.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain strong professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders and work effectively with all levels of employees is critical.

The University requires all staff to proactively undertake community, environment and social responsibilities as well as participate in University Committees in accordance with the themes established by the Strategic Plan 2022-2026.

Salary Band: $29,682.65 – $37,494.60    

The University offers a three-year full-time contract with renewals subject to performance reviews.
